Table Tennis Equipment... You either love it (love discussing it, learning about it, trying things out, etc...) or hate it (hate thinking about it, hate adjusting, hate paying for it...). It's not easy to find the right equipment, at least not without trying many different options. There's conventional wisdom, such as new players should use all-wood 5-ply blades with medium rubbers with decent grip, but nothing too crazy. 

Most people who have built a custom setup have probably gotten carried away building something a little too fast, at least once in their life... It's OK. Try to stick with things as long as you can, make informed changes and at least wear out the sheets of rubber you buy, before moving onto something else... 

Rarely, will you feel like a setup is perfect, but sticking with something is better than constantly switching.
